The forum “Transport of Russia” discussed the development of transcontinental transport corridors

The third business day of the forum “Transport of Russia” featured a plenary session entitled “Transport and Logistics in Eurasia. New Opportunities.” Representatives of Russian diplomatic corps, heads of international organizations, as well as foreign ministers attended the session.

The meeting was opened by Alexander Pankin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, who read out the welcome address of Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov to the participants of the forum and exhibition. “The forum is a high-profile platform that brings together industry experts, representatives of public authorities as well as international organizations of European and Asian countries. Today, traffic infrastructure is among the powerhouses of global economic growth, and successful development of transport in Eurasia will contribute to the emergence of a brand new economic architecture on the continent,” Sergey Lavrov noted.

According to Alexander Pankin, the need for transport services is constantly growing, which requires active involvement of all Euro-Asian countries in the development of the necessary regulatory legislation.

In his speech,  Rashid Alimov, Secretary General of Shanghai Cooperation Organization, noted that transport cooperation is ascending to a new level. Today the expanses of Eurasia and the Asia-Pacific region are considered to be a single macrocontinent. “Today it becomes a secure space of sustainable robustness, open for cooperation,” Rashid Alimov added.

Raising the topic of universal digitization,   Adamkul Zhunusov , Member of the Board (Minister) for Transport and Energy of Eurasian Economic Commission (ECE), said: “Today, digitization has become a catalyst for global transformation of all economy sectors and a new driver for the development of integration processes in the EEU space.”

The discussion was continued by   Hahm Hongzhu , Deputy Executive Secretary of ESCAP:A year before, ESCAP Ministerial Conference decided to establish an Interregional Transport Coordinating Committee for Transportation between Asia and Europe.

Today, such topics as expansion of cooperation between our continents in terms of  the development of all transport systems are on the agenda, and the most pressing are the regulatory issues of border crossing and transit travel; as well as harmonization of the technical standards and coordination of initiatives and projects of participant countries. Our objective is to achieve unobstructed and barrier-free movement of goods and people across the Eurasian continent.

The topic of barrier-free movement of goods and passengers was elaborated by  Walter Nissler, Acting Director of the UNECE Sustainable Transport Division: “We are proactively developing Euro-Asian transport corridors, and the biggest problem that we see is the low speed of crossing borders between countries by transport.”

 Uldis Augulis, Minister of Transport of the Republic of Latvia, spoke on the development of Euro-Asian transport corridors and the participation of the Baltic countries in this process: “The geographical position of and well-developed transport infrastructure in Latvia give us an advantage in the transit market between Europe and Asia, and we plan to develop logistics services.”

Also, Zhamshitbek Kalilov, Kyrgyz Minister of Transport , Dai Dongchang, Deputy Minister of Transport of the People's Republic of China, and Bat-Erdene Jadamba, Minister of Transport of Mongolia, made presentations during the session.

All speakers came to the conclusion that it is necessary to develop a modern regulatory legislation for international cooperation and develop transcontinental transport corridors. All of this will contribute to optimizing the region's economy structure, expanding access to sources of raw materials and new markets, while significantly reducing the time of goods delivery and simplifying the external control.

The program of the forum featured a meeting of the Greater Tumen Initiative Transport Board and a high-level meeting of the North Dimension Partnership on Transport and Logistics (NDPTL). During the discussion “Eurasia HSR”. Geopolitics and Technology”  geographical, political and technological challenges facing the states and companies constructing the mainline were discussed.

Alexander Misharin, First Deputy CEO of JSC Russian Railways, CEO of JSC High-Speed ​​Railways, commented on the Eurasia project, noting: “We initiate a big, important and ambitious project, whose economic, technological and scientific significance cannot be overestimated. The Eurasia project is global, it is designed to integrate the two high-speed railway systems - Chinese and European. The total length of Eurasia mainline will be 9.5 thousand kilometers, and we plan to implement this project in 8 years.”

Also, during the industry conference “Sea for Children” the topics of children’s additional education on maritime and fluvial transportation were discussed, and the best practices in this area were presented.

In the afternoon, during an official tour across the “Transport of Russia” exhibition, the participants presented new technological developments, successfully implemented projects and those scheduled for implementation. Also in the afternoon, the urban session “High-Speed Lines Development in the Regions” was held within the meeting of the Association of Heads of Regions and Cities Located on HSR and the meeting of the Working Party “Hyperloop Technology Development in Russian Transport Sector”.
