The Freeport of Riga is the largest port in Baltic States in terms of cargo turnover. In 2013, the cargo turnover reached 35.5 million tonnes. The port is multifunctional and offers year round navigation. Main types of cargo handled at the port are coal, oil products, containers, timber, fertilizers and metals. Due to geographical location, 1520 mm rail gauge and excellent hinterland connections the Port of Riga serves as an efficient hub for multimodal transit cargo transportation between EU countries and Russia, offering also advantages provided by the Free Economic Zone regime.
