GLONASS Held a Plenary Discussion at the Forum Transport of Russia.

On November 30, within the framework of business programme of the Forum Transport of Russia, GLONASS organized a plenary session GLONASS ERA ‒ Era of Intelligent Roads.

The event was attended by Igor Levitin, Aide to the President of the Russian Federation, Andrey Nedosekov, CEO of GLONASS, and Aleksandr Gurko, President of GLONASS UNION.

In his speech, Maksim Sokolov, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, stressed that the introduction of navigation and information technologies is a strong development trend in different sectors, especially in transportation. “Today, transport sector is the largest consumer of global satellite navigation system GLONASS and other space technologies”, he said.

With this in mind, the Ministry conducts active research activity for the development and implementation of relevant solutions for transport. Special attention is paid to navigation and information management on the territory of the Far North, Siberia and the Russian Far East. “Within the framework of the federal target program for Maintenance, Development and Use of GLONASS System in 2010-2020 only, more than 50 campaigns aimed at implementation the technologies were realized", Maksim Sokolov said.

Being the moderator of the discussion, Andrey Nedosekov, CEO of GLONASS, added that by the end of 2016, more than 120,000 cars in Russia will be equipped with Accident Emergency Response System ERA-GLONASS. “By the end of this year, the number of cars using ERA-GLONASS is expected to reach 120,000”. Over 92,000 calls have been handled, including 268 calls related to traffic accidents”, Andrey Nedosekov informed. He also noted that ERA-GLONASS that started operating in 2015, but has already helped save lives.

Valentin Gapanovich, Senior Vice President and Chief Engineer of Russian Railways, noted that rail transport is the second largest potential consumer of reception equipment for satellite navigation systems after road transport. Today, JSC RZD is developing a global Digital Railroad project with active use of GLONASS technology. The key challenge for the holding is the creation of an electronic platform to manage all processes in the field of passenger and freight transportation, infrastructure and rolling stock.

Igor Yurgens, President of Russian Association of Motor Insurers, noted, that today, it is extremely important to install GLONASS module in every car, for after the introduction of European Accident Statement a lot of frauds appeared in Russian regions that use it to get money. “The introduction of a system like this in Russians’ cars will help us understand whether we witness an accident of a fraud”.

In addition, all participants of the plenary discussion agreed that the introduction of GLONASS system will accelerate the response of special services to traffic accidents and help save more lives.
